Scope and Contents
These papers document the work of Danish astronomer and astrophysicist Bengt Strömgren over the course of his affiliation with the Institute for Advanced Study. Materials include Strömgren's administrative notebooks, manuscripts, and publications as well as preprints from Faculty and Members with the Institute for Advanced Study School of Mathematics. The materials are arranged into series according to format and date from 1952-1967.

Biographical / Historical
Bengt Georg Daniel Strömgren (1908-1987) was born in Gothenburg, Denmark in 1908. Strömgren attended the University of Copenhagen where he received both undergradaute and doctoral degrees in astronomy and atomic physics by 1929. Strömgren went on to become a professor at the University of Copenhagen, and briefly at the University of Chicago. In 1940, Strömgren initiated a project to build the Brorfelde Observatory at the University of Copenhagen. However, he ultimately left the University of Copenhagen in 1951 to take a position in the United States as the director of the Yerkes and McDonald Observatories. Six years later in 1957, Strömgren accepted a position as Faculty at the Institute for Advanced Study School of Mathematics where he remained until 1967. Following his work at the Institute for Advanced Study, Strömgren returned to Denmark where he lived until he passed away in 1987.

The Bengt Strömgren papers consist of the notebooks, manuscripts, publications, and preprints of Danish astronomer and astrophysicist Bengt Strömgren. The materials correspond to Strömgren's work as a Faculty of the Institute for Advanced Study School of Mathematics and date from 1952-1967.
Arrangement
Archivists arranged this collection into the following three series: Administrative notebooks, Manuscripts and Publications, and School of Mathematics preprints.
Processing Information
Upon receipt, archivists housed materials in acid-free containers. Archivists later arranged the materials into three series and removed publications and materials widely distributed to the Institute Faculty that did not originate with Professor Strömgren.
