The materials predominately originate from the tenures of former Directors Abraham Flexner, Frank Aydelotte, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and Carl Kaysen and date from 1923 to 1974.

Select materials in this collection are subject to the Institute for Advanced Study Archival Policy (1986).
Per the Institute for Advanced Study Archival Policy, Institute records remain under restriction for 30 years from the date of the record’s creation. Additionally, all institutional records related to personnel (including human resources record and/or records related to recommendation and/or appointment to the Institute) remain restricted for the lifetime of both the creator and subject.

Researchers are welcome to publish, reproduce, and use the Shelby White and Leon Levy Archives Center’s holdings in accordance with U.S. Copyright Law. Under the Fair Use doctrine, users may freely reproduce materials for personal research, teaching, and/or scholarship. Overview
The Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton, N.J.). Director's Office. Public correspondence includes correspondence and enclosures from the general public created and accumulated by the Institute for Advanced Study Director's Office staff. The materials predominately originated from the tenures of former Directors Abraham Flexner, Frank Aydelotte, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and Carl Kaysen and date from 1923 to 1974.
Arrangement
The records are arranged chronologically into two overlapping time periods. The first four boxes of the collection date from approximately 1923-1971. The final two boxes date from 1967-1974. Within these chronological groupings, materials are arranged alphabetically by the last name of the correspondent.
Custodial History
Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton, N.J.). Director's Office staff transferred these records to the Historical Studies and Social Science Library following the creation of the Institute for Advanced Study Archival Policy in 1986.
Processing Information
Upon transfer, archivists housed materials in acid-free containers for long-term storage and preservation. Archives staff additionally created bibliographic records for the first eight folders of this record group in the Library's Horizon database.
