Scope and Contents
The Association of Members of the Institute for Advanced Study (AMIAS) records consist of materials documenting the incorporation and work of AMIAS organization on behalf of former Members and Visitors of the Institute for Advanced Study. Materials include the AMIAS Articles of Incorporation, By-laws, Board of Trustees meeting minutes, and Board of Trustess Committee meeting minutes. Additional records include administrative files and correspondence related to fundraising and programming as well as AMIAS publications and former Member reports. Materials date from approximately 1968-2020.

Select materials in this collection are subject to the Institute for Advanced Study Archival Policy (1986). Restrictions have been indicated at the folder-level.
Per the Institute for Advanced Study Archival Policy, Institute records remain under restriction for 30 years from the date of the record’s creation. Additionally, all institutional records related to personnel (including human resources record and/or records related to recommendation and/or appointment to the Institute) remain restricted for the lifetime of both the creator and subject.

Researchers are welcome to publish, reproduce, and use the Shelby White and Leon Levy Archives Center’s holdings in accordance with U.S. Copyright Law. Under the Fair Use doctrine, users may freely reproduce materials for personal research, teaching, and/or scholarship. Under the same doctrine, users may cite or publish selected passages and/or quotations for comment and criticism. In accordance to U.S. Copyright Law, researchers seeking to reproduce and/or publish materials in the entirety and/or for commercial purposes will require the permission of the copyright holder.
The Institute for Advanced Study holds the copyright to materials generated by Institute employees over the course of their work for the Institute. Where the Institute for Advanced Study holds the copyright, researchers are free to reproduce materials for one-time, non-commercial purposes. For all other cases, researchers are responsible for contacting the Archives Center to request permission at: archives@ias.edu
For all materials for which the Institute is not the copyright holder, researchers that choose to pursue publication and/or reproduction are responsible for determining the individual who does hold the copyright and requesting permission directly from that individual. Biographical / Historical
Former Institute for Advanced Study Members established the Association of Members of the Institute for Advanced Study (AMIAS) in 1973. According to Institute records, former Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) Member and Visitor Paul Sally initially raised the possibility of creating an alumni organization with then IAS Director Carl Kaysen on August 16, 1973. A week later on August 24, 1973, a small group of former Members held the first organizational meeting of the nascent organization. At this time, former Members Reginald E. Allen, Francis Fergusson, Wu-chung Hisant, Paul Sally, and Leonardo Taran signed the Articles of Incorporation for AMIAS as the first members of the AMIAS Board of Trustees.
The AMIAS Articles of Incorporation identify the corporation's function as: "to encourage, foster, and support the scholarly work and interests of the Institute For Advanced Study and the Members thereof, past, present, and future, and to promote liaison between the Institute For Advanced Study and the academic community at large." Following the creation of the Articles of Incorporation, the AMIAS Board of Trustees crafted By-Laws and held its official meeting on October 6, 1973.
In the years since its founding, AMIAS has continuously offered support and programming for former Members and Visitors affiliated with the Institute for Advanced Study. As these records reveal, AMIAS remains active in providing funding, publications, lectures, and events that supporty the community of scholars at the center of Institute life. Today, AMIAS membership consists of over 6,000 scholars dispersed across over fifty countries.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The Association of Members of the Institute for Advanced Study (AMIAS) transferred these records to the Shelby White and Leon Levy Archives Center in 2015. AMIAS transferred additions to these records to the Shelby White and Leon Levy Archives Center in 2016, 2018, and 2020.
Processing Information
Archivists rehoused these materials into acid-free containers upon receipt. Archivists additionally arranged individual accessions upon receipt.
