General recordsconsist of correspondence, memoranda, reports, printed materials, and other documentation created or accumulated by Institute for Advanced Study Director's Office beginning with its foundation in 1930 and proceeding until approximately 2000. Materials include materials received by several directors and include correspondence with former Directors: Abraham Flexner, Frank Aydelotte, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Carl Kaysen, and Harry Wolf as well as Director's Office administrative staff.

Select materials in this collection are subject to the Institute for Advanced Study Archival Policy (1986).

Per the Institute for Advanced Study Archival Policy, Institute records remain under restriction for 30 years from the date of the record’s creation. Additionally, all institutional records related to personnel (including human resources record and/or records related to recommendation and/or appointment to the Institute) remain restricted for the lifetime of both the creator and subject.

Researchers are welcome to publish, reproduce, and use the Shelby White and Leon Levy Archives Center’s holdings in accordance with U.S. Copyright Law. Under the Fair Use doctrine, users may freely reproduce materials for personal research, teaching, and/or scholarship. The Institute for Advanced Study holds the copyright to materials generated by Institute employees over the course of their work for the Institute. Where the Institute for Advanced Study holds the copyright, researchers are free to reproduce materials for one-time, non-commercial purposes. Custodial History

The Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton, N.J.). Director's Office staff transferred the bulk of the General Files to the Historical Studies and Social Science Library in the 1980s following the creation of the Institute for Advanced Study Archival Policy in 1986. The Director's Office continued to transfer general files to the archives as accruals into the early 2000s.

Processing Information

Upon receipt, archivists housed materials in acid-free containers for long-term storage and preservation.
